A lot of people are often unclear when they describe their kitchen design and kitchen style. Here is a simple description of the most used styles of today.
What is really the difference when you say modern? Contemporary? Or traditional? Sometimes, the wrong terms are used when trying to describe your vision to someone else. Using the right words when speaking to a kitchen remodeling professional is important in order to achieve the dream look you’ve always been looking for. Here are the main differences between each one to help you better understand and describe the look you actually desire when hiring a general contractor or kitchen designer.
Modern and contemporary often get mixed up to being similar by most people. However in the kitchen design world, modern is known to be an era of design coming from the mid 20th Century. Modern designs showcase clean lines, earth tones, open spaces, and more often goes by the terms “form follows function”.
Clean and clutter free kitchen countertops, functional spaces, neutral colors are some of what you can incorporate in a modern looking kitchen. In other words, “less is more”
Contemporary design may also be referred to as transitional design and can be described as a mixture of modern and traditional designs. In LOS ANGELES, contemporary design features of what is “in” today. Thus the word contemporary brings a meaning of “with the time”. This design concept features elements from shiny surfaces, glass and stainless steel. It has a softer look compared to modern designs. Another key feature of contemporary design would have bold and striking artistic features that may come in forms of art or lighting to create an accent in a space. Bold colors, decorative accent kitchen backsplash, geometric shapes, pops of color are a few other key elements that make up the look of having a contemporary looking kitchen. In addition to that, the way to go would be adding top notch commercial appliances, creating a luxurious glossy look.
Traditional kitchen design elements usually bring in a classic feeling of space. Evolving from the baroque period of time, featuring colors in brown and gold, details, mouldings and rich furnishings. You may find embellished designs like a claw foot detail that shows the traditional look. The traditional kitchen design has its classy feel or richness and glam. Though in these current times, traditional kitchen look is often mixed with a little modern touch to soften up the space and not make it look very heavy.
For example, you may have a granite slab for the countertop and have detailed pedestals for the kitchen island with traditional looking cabinets.
