If your bathroom is looking a little boring these days, you might want to consider ways to freshen up the tiles, whether they’re on the walls, floors, or in the shower or tub. Below are a number of different ways that your bathroom remodeling project can include enhancing your tiling.
-
Clean: Sometimes you don’t realize how nice your tiles can look because their color has been dulled under layers of sticky dust, soap scum, or even mold. Before you make any other decisions about your tiles, give them a good cleaning and see how beautifully they shine.
-
Replace the Grout: The grout between the tiles can make your bathroom look old and worn. Replacing it can give your bathroom a new look. If you want to match the existing grout color, seek it out at a home improvement store. Although white is the most common grout color, it’s also possible to give your bathroom a new look with tinted grout.
-
Paint Accent Tiles: If you have a bathroom full of tiles in a boring white or other solid color, you might want to think about having selected tiles hand painted as part of your bathroom remodeling project. Create a pattern of select tiles interspersed along a wall. Or paint a row of tiles, creating a chair rail effect. Another option is to paint the tiles that border the sink, tub, or door. If painting is beyond you or your budget, consider finding appliqués or stickers that are designed to stick to tile.
-
Add Accent Tiles: Having all of your bathroom tiles replaced is an expensive prospect, but if you want to freshen up your bathroom’s look, you may only need to add accent tiles. They can enliven a solid color wall or break up a repetitive pattern. If accent tiles are part of your bathroom remodeling plans, you first need to choose the accent tiles and then design the pattern for how the tiles will look on the wall. The process of removing a single tile and replacing it with another one isn’t as hard as it sounds. Just make sure the new tile is the same size as the old one.
-
Re-Paint: You cannot re-glaze tile, but it can be re-painted. It’s a complex, multi-step process, but it is less expensive than replacing your tiles altogether. As part of your bathroom remodeling project, you can paint tile on walls or floors, but not in tub or shower areas since they get wet too frequently. The process does require painting over the grout, so there will not be as big a contrast between the tile and grout colors. But painting the grout will also make it more waterproof. If your grout needs replacing, you should do so before painting.
