We know how you feel. You’re sitting there, staring at your painfully outdated kitchen and thinking to yourself, “Is it really worth all the stress and frustration, or can I just live with it like this a little longer?” Yes, we understand that very few people love renovation as much as we, as General Contractors in Los Angeles, do. But there are things you can do to lower the stress and save money in your kitchen remodel. We’ll let you in on our secrets, since we like you so much.
LOOK AROUND – Take some time on your own, with no timeline or pressure, to do a little window shopping. Research product types and the options that will work best for you, and compile a wish list for your dream kitchen remodel before ever getting a bid. Make very specific notes as to things you like and dislike. When it comes time to do the actual design, the process will be quick and tailored to your needs.
THINK AHEAD – Where will this kitchen be in 5 years? 10 years? Are you planning on staying there forever or is it a step on your way to your dream home? If you ever plan on selling your house, make sure that your kitchen remodel has future buyers in mind. Even if you never plan to move, trendy kitchen remodels are typically not the best investment, since they will quickly become outdated. But if you are really set on the latest style, let it show up in elements like the backsplash and paint rather than the more permanent pieces such as cabinets and countertops. That way, your cost will be less when it’s time for the inevitable update.
BE PRACTICLE – Remember in all your excitement that a kitchen is first and foremost practical. Make sure that the layout you choose reflects that fact and utilizes every inch of space to its fullest capacity. The average American can spend between 18 and 21 years of their life in the kitchen. Don’t choose a design that makes those years depressing and disliked.
GET HELP – Unless you have renovation experience, or a very simple project, don’t tackle it DIY style. While it may seem like a great financial choice, the truth is that most do-it-yourself projects take 3 to 4 times longer than with a good general contractor at OTM Designs & Remodeling serving the greater Los Angeles area, and eventually 20% of frustrated homeowners end up calling for some professional back up, whether to finish the project they started or to fix the mistakes they made. Don’t be that person.
HIRE RIGHT – Of course, we have a recommendation for the best design and remodeling company in town, which is OTM Designs & Remodeling. There are a lot of specific things to look for. Check out our guide “Choosing and Working with a General Contractor for Your Home Remodel”. We know you’ll feel better about tackling a kitchen renovation after following these tips. It doesn’t have to be all pain and anguish. And always remember, deep breaths…
