A few years ago homeowners only had a couple of options in selecting a kitchen sink faucet, but today there are a bewildering array of different faucet types in various styles and finishes. If you’re planning a kitchen remodeling project, get ready because you’ll have some decisions to make.
Single Handle Faucet: This is the most traditional kind of kitchen faucet, with a single lever that allows you to control water temperature and volume with one gesture. This variety is convenient and doesn’t clutter up the top of the sink. Many homeowners find it hard to control water temperature with this faucet.
Double Handle Faucet: Looking more like a traditional bathroom sink, the double handle faucets offer better water temperature control. They do require more holes in your sink top and the additional handles can make the area more cluttered looking and harder to clean.
Pull-out Spray Faucet: Many traditional sinks offer a separate spray head that you can use to direct water where you want, making them handy for washing dishes or cleaning out the sink. Today, however, you can get a primary faucet which can pull out into a sprayer when necessary. This saves the sink-top clutter of an additional sprayer and pull-out faucets usually have better water pressure than the side-mounted sprayers. Wall-Mounted Faucet: Most faucets are attached to the sink; however, faucets coming right out the wall are growing more popular. They offer a professional kitchen look that many homeowners think complements their professional-grade appliances. Wall mounts also prevent clutter on the sink top and give a lot of clearance between faucet and sink, making them handy for watering plants or filling large pots.
Style and Finish: Today you can get faucets in just about any style made from any material. Oiled bronze and rubbed brass can give your kitchen an old-fashioned feeling if you’re going for a retro, Victorian, or country kitchen design. Nickel and bright brass finishes convey a more sleek and modern aesthetic. Stainless steel is a durable and inexpensive option. You also want the faucet style to match the sink.
Whatever style you select, however, make sure the faucet you choose is well-made and durable. A kitchen sink will be turned on and off many times a day. You want something that can stand up to the pounding and will last a long time.
