Life can get hectic and stressful. That’s because most people have a lot on their plates. The average adult is juggling the demands of things like work, family, friends and school. It’s no surprise that people spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars on vacations and spas. According to the U.S. Travel Association, Americans spent a total of $564 billion on leisure travel in 2011.
Of course, it’s always great to see new places – but travel isn’t always feasible on every budget. Sometimes, it’s cheaper to make do with what you already have. You don’t have to travel a million miles away to get peace of mind. You can create your own little oasis right inside your home.
Consider making your bathroom your own little spa. Think about it: it’s private, it’s quiet, and you already spend a lot of time there. Read along to find ways to turn your master bathroom into a tranquil paradise.
1.Add a Whirlpool Bathtub
A good long soak in the tub can change your whole outlook on life. In today’s go-go-go society, most people use showers as the quickest way to get clean. The art of taking a long, relaxing bath has fallen by the wayside. By adding a tub to your master bath, you can do just that whenever the mood strikes. Add scented candles, some essential oils, or good bath salts, and you have paradise a few steps from your bed. Of course, you’ll want to enlist a good plumber to get the install done just right.
2.Install a Sound System
Music can also be a great way of adding a measure of relaxation and calm to your life. A bathroom sound system allows you to listen to your favorite tunes as you get ready for work – an instant mood improver on those days when it’s hard to get going. Also, when you are looking to relax and unwind, you can listen to something soothing and tranquil to set the mood. Of course, electronics and water can be a deadly mix. Enlist the help of a trusted electrician to help you get the sound system you want in the safest manner possible.
3.Try a New Coat of Paint
Scientific studies have proven that color has a big effect on the human brain. Blues can make you feel calm, reds can make you feel hungry and yellows can make you feel energetic. If you are looking to create a peaceful space in your master bathroom, consider using muted, neutral shades like blue, tan or creamy whites. It doesn’t have to be a major painting job, either. Sometimes just a few touches of your favorite neutral shade – maybe even just a wall – are all you need to set the mood.
4.Change your Décor
Decorate your bathroom using things you love, things that bring you peace. Hang up framed pictures that you’ve taken on your travels. Photos of nature – things like trees, clouds, mountains or streams – are also good choices for bathroom decorations. You don’t have to go overboard – just select a few simple, beautiful knickknacks to enhance the look of your bathroom. If you’re looking for an entirely new look for your bathroom, enlist the aid of an interior designer. That person can help you develop a theme for your bathroom, and then make it happen – step by step.
5.Add a Water Fountain
There are few things more soothing and relaxing than the soothing sound of water. There is a wide variety of beautiful tabletop water fountains on the market. You can buy one and simply place it on the sink. If you have the space, you can get even larger fountain features – you can even turn one wall of your bathroom into a water fountain. The good thing about using fountains as decoration in the bathroom is that they are already equipped to stand up to a moist environment like the bathroom.
6.Get Organized
Because you use your bathroom every day, it’s so easy for it to get cluttered. Towels, toothpaste, makeup and hair products can crowd every available surface area and even the floor. Figure out ways to help your bathroom look good and stay organized. There are so many tools on the market for just this task – all you have to do is figure out what makes sense for your bathroom. If you don’t have a closet or built-in storage shelving there, you might want to use attractive baskets to store clean towels. Consider hanging cabinets up on the walls, or purchasing a vanity with built-in storage.
7.Switch Up your Lighting
Set the mood in your bathroom by changing the lighting. Ditch overly bright, florescent lights for something softer. This can be accomplished as easily as switching out existing bulbs for new ones. You could also install a dimmer in your bathroom. Or – you could ditch the lights entirely and light some pretty candles when you want to relax.
8.Create a Plant Paradise
Bring peace and beauty to your space by bringing a little bit of nature indoors. Try putting a beautiful orchid or another kind of potted plant in your bathroom. Be sure to pick a plan that does well in moist, damp environments. If you don’t have a green thumb, or are concerned about pets eating your plants, you can try to put a realistic-looking fake plant or two in your bathroom instead.
9.A new Scent-sation
Who among us doesn’t appreciate a good-smelling bathroom? There are so many ways that you can make your bathroom smell great. You can light incense, use scented candles, use sprays or even oil diffusers. Many of these options can look as good as they smell – pick one that matches the mood and décor of your bathroom. If you want the look and smell of scented candles without the risk of fire damage, try using scented, flameless candles for similar effect.
10.Unique Touches
Think of special things that you know you like and that bring you peace. If you are an avid reader, create a special nook for books and magazines that you can read while you are soaking in the bath. If you like to travel, frame photos you have taken from places you have been. Whatever your hobby – be it history, trains, art, whatever – think of ways to use it as you create a bathroom that is uniquely suited to soothe you.
You don’t need a lot of money or even a lot of space to create a bathroom that is calm, beautiful and inviting. All you need is a little creativity and the desire to see your project through to the end to create a calming oasis in the midst of this chaotic world!
