Are you having an issue with a space that seems just way too small for you? Don’t worry you’re not the only one that ended up with a small bedroom. There are many ways to make your bedroom appear bigger and more spacious. Various eye tricks and furniture placement can ease your mind and vanish that claustrophobic feeling. If you’re in the process of a home remodel and there is a bedroom that you just can’t touch, contacting a design-build contractor can help you in creating a more functional bedroom.

Light and Bright

Haven’t you ever walked into a dark room and felt trapped? In darker rooms your depth perception isn’t as precise which causes you to perceive spaces much smaller than they are. Be sure to introduce as much light as you can, especially natural light, as everything appears more spacious. Especially here in sunny LOS ANGELES, this will create a more relaxed atmosphere to be in. Most of the time placing furniture in front of windows is inevitable but if this is the case make sure it has open backing to still allow sunlight in and not block it completely. If you’re planning on a remodeling project, contact a Design-Build General Contractor to incorporate more windows where possible

Utilizing Inconvenient Space

A small bedroom may be less than what your expecting when you want a spacious area. Utilizing every nook and cranny and minimizing blank space will help create a larger feeling room. Let’s start with the closet. A lot of times you may think that your closet is full enough, however utilizing empty space under hung clothing can be perfect area for a shoe rack or another set of shelves. One more popular idea is underbed storage. How often do you see a bed with empty space underneath it or just a bunch of junk pushed under? This is your chance to install drawers that slide out making it easy to access and keep organized. Staying free of clutter is of the most importance to prevent a small room from seeming even smaller. Contact a Design-Build General Contractor to help remodel or update your space to make it more functional for you!

Furniture Placement

When you don’t have the convenience of a large room, think twice about where you place certain pieces of furniture in your room. Most importantly keep the bed OUT of the center of the room. This may look nice but when it comes down to it, it cramps up all sides of your room and makes it even harder to maneuver around. Instead, place it in a corner. The room will flow nicer. This rule will apply to dressers and night stands as well. Night stands and dressers often are the foundation that your lamp stands on, but if the storage space of your night stand or dresser is unnecessary go ahead and get rid of them. This is now your chance install sconces or pendant lighting. They not only provide more space but will often give your room a little bit more style as well. Play With the Eye

The ability to trick the eye is very important when trying to make a small room appear larger. There are a few ways to achieve this idea. In the case of shelving, building your storage vertically gives your much less to look at than building storage horizontally. This will give you much more floor space. The same concept applies with furniture legs as well. Purchase furniture, like bed frames and dressers with taller legs as they will take focus away from a crowded floor and bring your eyes & attention higher up. Use color to trick the eye as well. When thinking about buying that new area rug for your small room, opt for cooler colors as they make space appear more open. Also, adding mirrors to a small space makes space appear much larger. If you have the ability, try to install mirrors on closet doors as it gives you the best results.
