Bath Design – Stylebath design

In With the Old, Out with the New. According to the National Kitchen and Bath Association, Traditional is the new Contemporary and is the number one design style, Contemporary comes in second and Shaker is a distant third. Vintage look fixtures are a trend that is expected to stay around.

Bath Design – Color

More colorful baths are in store for us in 2013. Crisp white spa type baths are still in, and neutrals too, but with colorful accents. Wouldn’t it be fun to wake up to the colors of beautiful Caribbean sunset – vibrant lavender, vivacious turquoise and lively peach?

These are some of the colors we will soon be looking at in the bath. One thing that is important to remember, while color is good, the right color in the wrong place can be unattractive. But not for the room – for you. For wall color, you do not want to use a color that will make you resemble the walking dead. Some colors reflect badly onto your face. Cool tones, like green and blue will make you look older, and yellow makes you look jaundiced and your makeup will look completely different when you go out into the sunlight or office. That doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t use these colors but be careful about using them in the sink area. For most of us, the most flattering colors for the sink area are warm peachy and rose tones. Soothing spa blues, greens and lavender make beautiful bathrooms, and can be used.  One solution is placing a huge mirror above the sinks that only reflects you.

Bath Design – Texture

We’re going to be seeing a lot of stone and wood–natural eco-friendly materials. Cool granite, marble, quartz, onyx and glass; warm wood-look laminate flooring and ceramic tile cleverly disguised as wood and wood vanities.

Glass tile can be used the same as you would ceramic tile. It’s very easy to care for with just some glass cleaner. It resists moisture damage and temperature changes. They do not break easily, but they can be very slippery and they can be scratched. It’s a good idea to buy glass tiles for the floor that have a sand-blasted surface.

Bath Design – Size

Remember when bathrooms were just large enough to squeeze in a toilet, bathtub and a sink? Today’s homes are becoming smaller, but interestingly, baths are not following suit, they are becoming larger. Builders are allowing more and more space for master baths and manufactures like Kohler are finding ingenious ways of filling that space.

Bath Design – Windows

The days of the tiny bathroom window or none at all, are over. Large windows are becoming the norm. If privacy is a problem blinds between the glass, shutters or frosted glass provides the solution.

bath designBath Design – Showers

Showers are present whether there’s a tub or not and they are the walk-in type. Showers are continuing to go high-tech.

Bath Design – Faucets

Satin nickel takes number one in the bath, strangely, brushed nickel isn’t faring well. Chrome, the standard for decades, comes in last.

Bath Design – Plumbing Fixtures

The most common color is still white.  Bisque, off-white, and taupe will be a close second.  Undermount sinks are number one, followed by integrated sink tops, drop-in sinks, vessel sinks, and pedestal sinks.

Bath Design – What is Out

Very modern style, chrome, carpeting, small cramped baths and small windows. Tub showers are over and out, unless it’s the vintage type.

I hope this gave you some ideas for your next bath remodel.
